The Topic

We are confronted today with a wide range of difficult challenges.

Unlike many problems in the past that could be addressed with the logic of industrial, cause and effect thinking, today’s challenges are anchored in complexity, interdependence, and turbulence

Today’s challenges require a different kind of thinking: as Einstein reminded us, we cannot solve problems with the same kind of thinking that brought them about.

We have crossed the threshold of complexity that requires us to look at our challenges in new ways.

Systems thinking is one such approach because it is specifically addressed to the properties and forces that arise from complex interdependence.

It also recognizes the central role of the environment, or context, in understanding – the person in his/her context; the group or organization in its environment.

In this Eco-Leadership webinar, James Krantz, PhD will guide us to the system thinking paradigm and its foundations in the first instance, then address its potential role in bringing about more just, humane, and inclusive societies.

The Agenda

In the first half of the webinar, James will deliver the main seminar.

In the second half, we'll move into a reflection-application session:

- 'Composting': experienced peers work the material in small groups to sprout new ideas;
- 'Weaving': attendees gather to collectively reflect and question, weaving our experiences together;
- Discuss how we will apply learnings to our personal practice in Reflection Application Pairs (RAPs).

The Speaker

James Krantz, PhD is an organizational consultant and researcher from New York, where he is Managing Principal of Worklab, a consulting firm focusing on strategy implementation and leadership development. His principal interests are with the impact of emerging trends on the exercise of leadership and authority; the social and technical dimensions of new forms of work organization; and the unconscious background to work and organizational life. Currently, Jim serves as Honorary Professor at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow; Chair, Editorial Committee of the Journal of Organisational and Social Dynamics; and Faculty, Dynamics of
